In my endeavors of trying to buy made in America products, I found that sometimes it is just easier to make it myself. This was in fact the base for my business model. It is so incredibly difficult to find good quality items that are made in the USA, much less something made with US sourced materials. It is simply easier to find the materials made in America and do it yourself.
Granted, I had to learn a lot of different things and work with materials I never handled previously. It was hard, and I am still learning with every project I undertake, but it is absolutely worth every drop of sweat, blood, and tears.
Now, my searches are not always detered by only where it is made but also if it even exists. I have so many ideas in my head, and it never fails to amaze me how some of them do not already exist.
The most recent example is a simple hair towel. We all know of the famous Twistie Turbie hair towel. It was convenient and lightweight. However, it is not as convenient for those of us with hair longer than 25 inches from root to tip. My hair is longer, and I mean much longer. It measures approximately 40 inches root to tip, so you can imagine how much trouble I have trying to tuck in the ends and twist it up without scalping myself or getting tangled in the loose button in the back. I began searching for something better with no luck, so I made something myself.
I took what I liked about the Twistie Turbie and made a few adjustments. The first being dropping the button and replacing it with a monkey fist knot sewn into the seam. It is sturdy, with no risk of falling off like all buttons do eventually. Further, the shape is rounded, making it easier to loop the loop while keeping it in place.
The next change I made, and probably the most pivotal, was adding a pocket. Yes, a pocket. It is located at the narrow end that the end of your hair hangs before twisting it up to the back of your head. This simple addition allows those with extra long hair to tuck those extensive ends into a safe little nook that protects them from damage and tangling.
I tell you, it is life changing. No more wrestling with sticky wet hair, or loose ends poking out from under the towel. Everything is tucked away, safe and sound.

It was one of my most satisfying triumphs, and it was so easy. Do you have any wins that just made your day? What have you taken on yourself that no one else accomplished?
